About Us

WINE-MAKING PHILOSOPHY:

Our Riebeek Cellars Collection displays dedication to truest expression of the Riebeek Valley in the heart of the Swartland wine region of South Africa. We hand-craft wines of distinctive flavour, elegance and balance, to be shared and enjoyed.

HISTORY:

Dispatched by Jan van Riebeeck in search of the perfect place to grow provisions for the Dutch East India Company, Lieutenant Pieter Cruythoff first discovered the Riebeek Valley in 1661 and founded the village of Riebeek Kasteel. Impressed by the single standing mountain, he called it Kasteelberg (‘Castle Mountain’) commemorating the ‘Castle of Good Hope’, the fortress of Commander van Riebeeck in Cape Town. He was the first to recognise the exceptional terroir potential for wine grape vineyards.

Fast forward 300 years of proud wine-making tradition, nine local wine grape farmers in the Riebeek Valley, established the winery in 1941 on the foothills of the Kasteelberg Mountain. Here only the toughest vines and people thrive against the odds. Riebeek Cellars Collection pays tribute to the tenacious spirit in all of us. Our wines are the reward for overcoming adversity through collaboration and passion for this place and its people.

MEET THE TEAM:

ANDRE ENGELBRECHT:
Chief Executive Officer

ALECIA BOSHOFF:
Head Winemaker & Head Of Production

“To our wine-making team it is essential that our Riebeek Cellars Collection wines accomplishes the highest standard of excellence and individual expression. We as a team strive to create an atmosphere that inspire wines that embody our region through dedication, enthusiasm and passion.”

JACQUES THERON:
Senior Winemaker

“The specific character of each wine has its origin in the vineyard and therefore my goal is to express the terroir in each glass of wine. Understanding and harnessing the diversified terroir of the Kasteelberg Mountain and the individuality of each vintage guides me in creating singular wines.”

ERIC SAAYMAN:
Senior Winemaker

“Innovative, meticulous wine-making practices and the best equipment enables us to push boundaries in producing wines that exceed expectation. Wine lovers are invited to experience the fruit of our wines and to enjoy true Swartland hospitality.”

THEMBILE NTLOKO:
Assistant Winemaker

“Often the best wine-decisions are made by “listening” to what the grapes are telling us from the vineyard. You must be truly present in each moment and handle each part of the process and the environment, entrusted to you, with care and respect.  It is a fine balance of strict protocol, listening and trusting your intuition.”

Awesome !! Congratulations Eric !

Our vineyards lie in a richly diverse area in terms of soil, climate & typography. Rainfall occurs during the winter months with cold enough temperatures to allow the vines to rest, before bud-break in early September. 🌿
